LOGSOL in Deutsche Bahn’s “New Cottbus Plant” alliance project
“New Cottbus plant” – rail partnership model
As part of the IPA* project “New Cottbus Plant”, Europe’s most modern maintenance plant is currently being built in Cottbus, a city with a population of around 100,000, which will also serve to establish the site as a maintenance center for Deutsche Bahn’s new ICE 4 fleet. In the project alliance, LOGSOL represents the general contractor for the design of the logistics as alliance partner 5. In line with the model, LOGSOL acts as an equal cooperation partner for the joint handling project in Deutsche Bahn’s IPA pilot project. The core idea behind the construction project, which is worth over one billion euros, is to keep costs and deadlines for planning and execution to a minimum. The rail partnership model stands for the IPA project form within the DB Group.
Hall 2 – Realization of logistics
As a general contractor, LOGSOL is also responsible for the procurement and implementation of the logistics infrastructure for the first time. In a short period of approx. seven months, the path from planning and design to realization of the logistics projects was completed. LOGSOL’s portfolio has been expanded by the expertise gained in commercial negotiations and the organization of the construction work. STILL was commissioned to provide the racking technology (pallet racking and shelving systems). In addition, load carriers and tugger train systems were procured. LOGSOL also supported the development of a prototype transport trolley by MaTec, which is now being used in large quantities.
As the cross-plant logistics will not be realized until 2026 when Hall 1 goes into operation, there is a rental agreement with the DLR – German Aerospace Center for the interim logistics period until the central logistics building on the factory premises can be used. The rented area for goods receiving, storage and order picking covers an area of approx. 5,500 m2. The transportation of the required components between the plant and the external warehouse is ensured by the use of shuttle services. LOGSOL also provided significant support in the drafting of the rental agreement.
Hall 1 – Outlook
In addition to the milestone of Hall 2, Hall 1 – and therefore the entire project – will be completed in 2026. The construction project will involve six times the construction volume. LOGSOL also faces challenging planning and execution tasks within the logistics package. The central logistics building is being constructed for the “New Cottbus Plant”, which will supply production and thus ensure a smooth maintenance process. Due to the scope of the project, here are some key figures for dimensioning:
- Storage area: approx. 8,500 square meters
- Area of tugger train station: approx. 1,500 sqm
- Number of parking spaces for large parts: approx. 12,500 pcs.
The execution services will take place between 2025 and 2026. Until then, LOGSOL will continue to plan the logistics infrastructure/processes and is looking forward to upcoming tenders, negotiations, awards, execution and completion.
LOGSOL will keep you up to date on all developments in the “New Cottbus Plant” project!
